One place I worked at everyone used to chip in a fiver (£10 from the manager) and get you a card and a gift voucher. When I turned 21 they all put more money in and got me H Samuel vouchers (I had mentioned on numerous ocassions I needed a new watch) they thought I could get a nice one with the vouchers, I did and 9 years on I still wear it and it's still going strong!
Another place I worked in gave you a card and a birthday cake. I still remember the embarrassment of them all coming out of the office with the cake singing happy birthday to me while I was serving a customer!!

:Last year we all stopped work at 11 am on my birthday and boated off for dinner Hover even secretly arranged for some of my family to arrive simultaneously (almost) at the jetty. That was special for my 35th, usually it seems to be just one of the cake bakers brings a cake in, except for Mr. Fly who, not being a cake lover, received an apple pie.

My birthday is 2nd of January, so TBH I'm usually ready to get back to work anyway after Christmas, plus adult b'days have never been a big thing in our family, they are celebrated of course, just not that fussed myself TBH. I do always try and make sure I'm off for Miss Smoo's b'day though, double digits this time round 
Used to buy cakes at my last place, but where I work now wouldn't have a clue it was your birthday or not, and as I'm field based buying cakes for one and all is just not practical.
