Bit of advice

My second hand bike for 75 quid might not have been such a good idea. I bought it for rattling to the shops on instead of the road bike. Had it a couple of weeks and the chain has hopped off a few times and jumped a bit under pressure. I though I might just need a new chain tonight I fluffed up the gears a bit and it has jammed solid. But I have now noticed the front middle cog has big chips out it and a couple of slits in it.

The bike is a marin stinson with quite a sturdy frame. I have got it booked in for a couple of tyres, brakes and a new chain next week but now the cost is mounting up
Can you still get parts for these type of bikes ? sure it is a good few years old

The teeth on the Shimano Tourney chainset you have are meant to be uneven and have holes in them, it helps them shift better up and down, the holes are stamped out little edges like a cheese grater, they pick the chain up and lift it as the chain ring turns.

Ah I see but I think one of the teeth has split down too the hole and bent out slightly so I guess it has had it

I think that rear mech has had it TBH, looks very odd. Parts should be easy and cheap enough to pick up for an old hack like this. Fleabay's always a good place to mooch

Thanks smokey but I will put my self in the hands of the guy in the shop he is very nice and in no rush to take money when it is not needed.
I am learning fast but only just got my head around changing a tube ;) so its a bit beyond me. If I can get it all sorted for under a £100 I will be happy

Needs an new chain and the middle ring knocking out (I'd say worse) with a hammer - that's it - The ring is bent, needs 'twi@ting' out straight, and a new chain as the existing one is too shore. Sorted.

A neighbour said I should go mobile bike mech last night.... as I fixed their son's bike in 2 mins (after they had a trip to a non Halfords store...has me thinking........

It's a bit dog eared but it's not bent - tourney rings look like that.

If they really need tweaking back an adjustable spanner does the job, no impact technology needed.

No, Zoiders, you're wrong there. The chain should be long enough to do big-big, but only just. That chain looks to be a couple of links short, but that's all. I'd not be changing the chain for that.

No I'm not wrong.

Big sprocket big ring should not pull the chain tight like a single speed, you shouldn't do that to the drive train of course but you can still do it and have the correct amount of wrap around the rear mech pulley wheels for the gears to shift back again.

I popped on a new chain tonight thought I may as well practice on the old bike rather than the new. Got the chain on fine and the mech now hangs at a decent angle. But the chain now slips like mad. I wonder if the cogs are too well worn and that's why it was run with such a tight chain. A lot of the teeth on the cogs are rounded rather than pointy on the front at least the back dont look too bad.
I am looking forward too getting it in the bike shop Monday too see what he makes of it.
After my success at getting the chain on I was temped to bug a new set of chain sets for the front but no idea what too get and once onto page two they are out of budget hehe
