Black Friday

As with most ‘sales’, Black Friday is an opportunity for retailers to get rid of old stock languishing in their warehouses.

This is why genuine bargains go within minutes of the sales because the retailers put out just enough new stock on sale to draw customers in (and so they can legitimately advertise and say they had this stuff on sale). The masses arrive at the shop, find the good stuff gone and buy the crap that retailer is desperate to get rid of.

Unfortunately, it’s a sad fact that some people buy things they see on sale because they think they are getting a bargain. In reality, they would never have bought the item(s) in the first place therefore it’s not a bargain as they are spending money on something they don’t need and probably don’t really want.

I’ve never bothered with it in the past as there hasn’t been anything I need. I am looking for new walking boots and will go shopping today but I won’t buy them until Friday in case there is a Black Friday offer for the ones I want.

If there is no offer I’ll go back Saturday and pay full whack.

A lot of retailers called Halloween "Halloween Week" whereas it is just in fact ONE ****** DAY.

They are starting to taketh the pith.

It gets worse every year (whining old man mode engaged). I got an e-mail from a training company today, announcing their "black Friday deals". As ever, many of the deals are not even as cheap as they have been at other times of the year. Or if they are, as @Mo1959 said, it's an excuse to yellow label items that would be superseded anyway.

However, there is no law in having extended sales (I'm looking at you DFS). As long as the regulators keep an eye on the small print so that things are not mis-sold. I think advertising something as "50% off" when it has been on sale 9 months ago for the same price is stretching things though.

There are rules governing this kind of thing now, which presumably explains the 'small print' I'm anal enough to actually read when it appears on-screen. Eg in an ad for Currys last night which had various items at '50% OFF!' ('sold at full price 11.10.17 - 14.11.17) and the like. Being a suspicious old bugger, it immediately occurs to me that such retailers clearly raise certain prices to stupidly unrealistic levels for one month specifically to lay the groundwork for '50% OFF!' offers a month later. Personally I tend to go for 90% off offers by buying off eBay from people duped by cynical advertising into surrounding themselves with stuff they don't need, and subsequently left short of cash by their own gormless behaviour.

I get confused with this so called Black Friday and the one before Christmas where people fight in pubs after having a skinful. That one's called black eyed Friday, i think?

TOP TIP: If there's no Black Friday discount on Friday, just pay full whack on Friday, that'll save you from going back on Saturday

Black Friday is an entire week on Amazon and they have had some pretty good deals on there so far.
I do most of my 'stocking filler' prezzie shopping on Amazon.
