I have been invited to a black tie event for the first (and possibly last) time in my life. As I neither own a black tie or a tux I am a little at a loss over how to kit myself out.

Moss Bros suits always look tacky to me - is there anywhere better to go?

No idea on the suit I'm afraid, but don't be tempted by a shirt with those silly wing collar wotsits.

There must be loads of hire places in York, Danny, surely Uncle Google can find something. In fact you may be able to buy one second hand for for less than the hire charge.

One great thing about Black Tie for men is that it is perfectly acceptable to wear something that you or someone else has had for 20 years, so long as it's clean. The only no-no is wearing one of those silly shirt frills.

Anyway, what the bejyazus is Comrade Danny doing attending such an occasion? I think we should be told.

Thinking about this again, I pretty sure every charity shop I've ever been in has had a black tie suit hanging around somewhere. Give it clean and you should be good to go.

I think the above suggestions are good ones especially hiring a suit considering you have no need for one normally. The only thing is make sure it fits well and doesn't look like a overized carrier bag plonked on.

I've found Moss Bros to be OK, they have a variety of styles, fit is usually good and the staff have known their onions. As said, keep it simple style wise.

You can get some decent quality rentals - but might be worth trawling the shops in the sales for a bargain in January. I'm not too familiar with the places up in York. Take your time to find one that fits- you will need to know obviously chest measurement for the suit and inseam for trousers and neck measurement for shirt -though I'm sure you know this already.
