Arch, you spoiled my story,

Well, maybe not. My first thought was 'can't be true' because I know how they do the letters in rock but he may not have fiddled with the machine. He may have made up a batch of rock with his words in. They might not have seen it until they cut it.

Good story anyway ;0)

There has been no large scale private sector investment in Blackpool in recent years. They were waiting for the mega casino decision which didn't happen.

The promenade is nice, but had to be done anyway as part of the national flood defence programme.

The Pleasure Beach is pretty embarrassing these days too, certainly compared to somewhere like Alton Towers.

Yes, a Mega Casino. That would have raised the tone of Blackpool no end! ;0) Seriously though, if they were going to build such a thing then Blackpool is where they should have built it. Would fit right in with the ethos of the place.

We've been talking of going to Alton Towers for years, we've never been. Every time we look at it though we think it's too far and too expensive for a couple of days and there's not enough to do in the area for a week's holiday. We'll need to go though, it looks awesome.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Blackpool's got its problems. However, a walk along north prom on a sunny summers' evening with the fresh air and what have you is hard to beat IMO.

Between north and south pier though, it's a complete armpit. And full of mongs in the summer.

Bloody nightmare to get to though as it's in the middle of nowhere.

That's what we thought. It's not the kind of place you would go to for a week as other than the park there's nothing there. People do go there for the day from where I am but it's too far in my opinion, about five-hours in the car.

Mega Casino. My In Laws live a 20 min car ride away.We used to go for a quick couple of hours with the girls.

The people who i saw would not set foot in a casino.

Like alot of seaside places it is run down because of lack of investment.

Cheaper holidays abroad and 14 days of sunshine everyday killed home holidays.

Scarborough's Futurist Theatre is closing soon.

Day trippers will not keep these places open.

I have to say i was in blackpool for the cycling and i thought it was really great, me and my family thoroughlty enjoyed it, having never been to blackpool before, we stayed for four days and it was a great funfilled time for all of us, yes there are drunken louts and what not, but can u honestly telll me of any holiday resort that doesnt contain this kind of filth? as far as i can see, the promenade itself looks great and will be fabulous when its finished, as for the pleasure beach its a great day out for young and old. the waether was lovely, the people we met were lovely and i just think that those of you who slag off blackpool is because you are too fussy. Its about enjoying yourself and making things fun.

p.s alton towers is good, ive been there 4 times myself however u really need to be careful about what time of year you go, last time we went was april and we qued for 2 hours for some rides.ridiculous....... wouldnt get that in blackpool

Ha ha, no you wouldn't 'cos nobody wants to go there.

But you're probably right about holiday resorts; I used to have a colleague who has a chalet at Abersoch in North Wales. We call it Vulgarsoch because it's the posing resort for the filthy rich and the footballers from Cheshire. You buy a chalet after waiting for years and then every 25 years or so you have to replace it completely - my colleague got one with 6 months left and had to spend £95,000 to bring in the new chalet. The place is awash with ostentatious cash and alpha males driving BMWs, reversing their speedboats into the water and tearing around in RIBs and on wetbikes. My colleague eventually left his very good and secure job here because our boss refused to let him have a beemer and he couldn't take the shame of being forced to drive an Audi A4 like every other senior employee. Vanity is a terrible thing.

The beer, chips and accommodation in Blackpool should be subsidised by the tax payer 'in the national interest'. The more people they can encourage to go there for their holidays, the less chance to will go and embarrass us abroad.

Then all traces of Blackpool must be removed from the travel guides and maps of the UK sold abroad, and even it's name should be removed from the M6 signboards so there is no chance of foreigners ever seeing our national embarrassment that is Blackpool on a Saturday night.

It's not just Blackpool though; it's any town centre. I once picked up an African visitor from the Novotel in Manchester. When I asked how he'd slept he complained that there had been a lot of noise outside his window and that when he had got up to look he had seen about 150 prostitutes queueing to enter a door, screamng and shouting and pissed out of their brains. "Oh," I replied, "they weren't prostitutes Mike, they were just Manchester girls on a normal night out."

(I went with my family to pick him up the following Saturday afternoon but we found ourselves cut off from the hotel by the gay parade. His face was an absolute picture when it eventually ended and we were reunited!)
