I had a medical last week and was told im a stone overweight,i thought it was two.The only thing was the silly cow asked me how far the commute in was and i said ten miles. That isnt far the overweight doctor told me.Try it at 4am pal in all weathers and when you aren't at your best.(posted via mobile phone):-S

My surgeon's the same. "Are you racing yet?" she keeps saying when she sees me once a year for a check up. But then she is a triathlete. God what a woman.

God, I could eat a slice of pizza the size of a dustbin lid right now.

Well, make it a very thin crust one, with lots of tomato paste, be a bit stingy with the cheese, and top it with roasted vegetables, olives, chicken, low fat stuff.

Speaking as a fairly unsuccsful dieter, who coulddo with losing a stone really, I know it's not so easy, but if you end up denying yourself all the nice stuff, you'll be much less motivated! I'm very slowly getting to grips with making smaller portions, and eatig salad with everything to help fill up. OK, the Ceasar dressing isn't ideal...;)

Work at it! Middle age doesn't have to be like that. Rediscover the fun of your childhood by doing stuff with your kids, nieces or nephews. Take up activities you always wanted to do but use "keeping the younger generation company" as an excuse.

I'm not going to boast about the results of my annual medical, or big myself up, but at 40 I'm having a new lease of life by doing things with the kids and taking regular exercise to try and make it all look effortless & be a good role model.

There are some good side effects for me & Mrs Stig too!

Keep at it...my kids ask why I'm off riding...."to keep up with you two" I say...although I see my son will be up for rides in a few years - road bikes and all - he's been asking questions aged (a small) 7 about road bikes...... although he does beat the bigger kids in 'races' down the road easily..

I found/still find commuting at a hard fast pace is great, and on a slicked MTB..... get's your fitness up.

I won't say it's easy - I've ridden bikes all my life, and 'properly' from 16 in a club, so it's imprinted, but give it a year, you'll be getting there. Cycling isn't easy, no matter how fit you are.. you just push harder.... what was hard is now easy, but you are now doing a few mph more......and finding it just as hard.... use the local topography (hills) as there is no going back...I felt like getting off on a 1 in 5 today, for a millisecond, just as it kicked in... got up it no problem....other than a bit of swearing......as going back home the same way was as bad.... DON'T STOP ...DON'T GET OFF...

PS I'm 38.5 and now fitter than when I was racing in early 20's - just need a 10TT to prove it. Same weight, but no lightweight - 12 and a bit stone for 5 foot 9 inches - so no skinny bugger, but lean and mean (ish)

Sorry, not entirely cyclo-commuting related, but a bit of good news for me yesterday -my cholesterol is 218 which means I don't have to go on any cholesterol lowering drugs! Yippee! Rejoice! I'm not feeling as old as I thought I was.....

I really wasn't looking forward to being on a maintenance medication for the first time ever, so a big positive for me.

Well, since I'm off cyclo commuting for a while, thought I'd update this post. To date:

-lost just over 2 stones
-total cholesterol down 17 points
-blood pressure is excellent now

Can't wait to get back on the bike for commuting -I'm into my mtb phase at the moment as usually cycling is just too cold (well at least for me) on the road. Really enjoy that, but do miss the cyclo commuting without a doubt. Have been running very regularly, and recently did a road race with 4 miles at ~8:40 pace, which though is agonizingly slow for most fit folks, is good for me. My aim is to get down to 8 minute miles.

Just got to keep that weight off during the hols!

I think middle-aged sporty people tend to be quite hard on ourselves! Never forget that you could drag a vast proportion of the population onto a bike, including many younger than you, and you would murder them. At least thats what I tell myself (especially when getting dropped)

maybe you could alternate your exercise more? Try doing different types? (Maybe some fast walking/ jogging/ running?) That way your body won't get 'used' to it so much perhaps... (but perhaps. No actual evidence behind this!)

I just think I cant be that knackered yet if I can ride 14 miles at a good clip, with panniers and a huge 17 inch Laptop lashed to the back, would love to know what the whole thing would weigh, I can barely lift it over the styal I pass through.

I started out cycling in Jan of this year, principally to lose weight.

However I didn't really lose much until I learnt about cadence and stopped eating so much crap. As someone pointed out early cycling will only help lose wieght if part of a calorie controlled diet! Now my daily 13 miles is a real workout and though I'm off dairy products in the main I eat normal food. ( but not huge portions anymore).

Even with only 13 miles a day I've able to lose a half kilo a week. If i stopped drinking and cut out chocs as well I'm sure I could increase the weight lose to a kg a week. That's a hybrid with rack, guards, pannier and heavy lock. If you use a carbon race bike they're so efficient you won't lose so much.

I could more kg and I'll no longer be BMI overweight.

One other minor effect, if that I've had no colds all year, feel lot better in myself and, of course look fab in all my cycling gear! (Well i think so even if my wife thinks I look a prat:laugh:
