Regarding the point of these messages with footage - when I first started out on my cycling commute it was really reassuring for me to not only hear about, but be able to see, what sort of things to be alert for during my journey.

Also, from my own personal point of view I still find it useful as I like to know that these things happen to others as well. It makes it easier for me to see these experiences as just a bit of bad driving that goes on rather than something to take personally. Otherwise I think I'd act a lot more high pitched and defensive

1. I was a poor driver and am a so so cyclist.

2. If you have the time/inclination to search, you will find films of poor cycling posted on this board for discussion.

3. "Bad" drivers and "bad" cyclists/pedestrians are not directly comparable. Who creates the greatest danger to others and who has the greatest burden of responsibility?

1. You are more humble than most

2. No I haven't, but anyway, it was more a rhetorical question to encourage a more open view of road users

3. The bad cyclist/pedestrian who jumps into a car the next day

1. Thank you.

2. I think many people on here do have an open view of road users. However, if you visit a mode specific forum - you will (understandably) find a degree of tribalism.

3. That's the driver then...!

Filming is about a lot of things to lots of people, and it's fairly obvious the naysayers here aren't getting any of those reasons.

Your surname isn't van der Merwe by any chance? (If you know my surname, then you'll know I'm sailing very close to the wind. )

Depends on whether you were RLJing and cut onto the wrong side of the road at a fairly major crossroads, in front of a car (which had stopped in the junction and seemed unsure whether to continue now all the lights were red and the peds were crossing)... and then continued onto the pavement ringing your bell to tell the peds to move out of the way.

Unbelievable stuff!

So, was it you?

I think I'm probably in agreement with trustysteed. Cycling is something I enjoy doing as well as it being a necessity ( I don't drive) . There does appear to be a lot of posts with videos about "look at this muppet" or " am i in the wrong" .Personally I don't care if you're in the wrong or not or if you carryed out some sort of road manouver straight out of cyclecraft, its all a bit sad. I do sometimes enjoy looking at the general muppetry (muppetry sounds so southern innit?) on the roads and comparing them to my own experience.

I don't care much for watching bad driving, but I do think you can learn from other cyclists' experiences by considering the circumstances of the incident. Film, whilst not perfect as evidence, does provide a lot of variables to consider.

My complaint about cycling cam footage posted on YouTube is that it skews the perception of cycling i.e. it's a dangerous activity.

Or good driving even? Mikey has been known to do this

Nothing in that footage that I haven't come across on my daily commute into London, certainly not enough to make me give them a second thought. Yes, there are bad drivers out there, but there are equally bad cyclists and pedestrians too. TrustySteed makes a valid point in that there is definitely a 'us and them' mentality between cyclists and motorists which is probably exacerbated by posts like this one. Somebody is either competent or they're not, regardless of whether they are walking, cycling or driving. How many of us would admit to being a bad cyclist or driver? Probably not many if at all.

Shouldn't Sh4rkyBloke be posting footage of bad cycling as well to educate us all in examples of blind, aggressive, shortsighted... or just stupid cyclists?

Wow.... hmmm, there must be some in my film somewhere...

So basically I have to post film about good drivers, film about bad drivers, film about good peds and bad peds, some about good cycling and some about bad cycling... do I need to consider animals in there too?:laugh:

Let's face it, if we tried to find a rationale we could all agree on, for everything we posted, the forum would be a very dull (and slow) place...

Telling jokes? Whatever for? Posting pics of a new bike? Why for goodness' sake? Asking for personal advice? Go get some real friends...

And as for getting on and enjoying cycling, it's quite possible to do that while filming, you don't have to think about the filming until afterwards in the editing suite*...

*my living room for example.

Is that a public invitation, Arch?:biggrin:

I'll stay over in Manchester if you don't mind... lots of footage to be putting together to keep everyone happy.

I think it would be a good back up for you on you tube and on here etc.
With any criticism you may get that you only film & highlight bad car driving incidents then 1 or 2 incidents of exceptionally good driving would/should silence any critic.
Bit of the old Ying Yang dear boy
