Blogging software

My wife wants to start blogging family news to her family and friends scattered around the globe. Usual sort of stuff - newsletter, photos etc.

Any recommendations on simple user friendly blogging software - Wordpress, Blogspot, other? Handy hints on what to look for?

I would go for wordpress.com - much nicer templates.
