Not really. Google implies I'm subhuman although if I retry lots and lots and lots I sometimes manage to fluke my way past an eyetest eventually. As you can appreciate, that means I usually give up, unsubscribe from the blog of the person who hates people like me and go elsewhere.
Shame, but remember, its not the person that hates people like you, its Google not listening to people like you. I have blogged about a disabled person and used Google blogs to do it. I am all for enabling all people.

So it looks as if Wordpress is a good bet. If I had the free version would i be able to upload many photos and videos or would I be better off paying for the next version up?

Mine is all done on the free version: https://unanglaisendiois.wordpress.com/

There are lots of templates, and though they might miss some features, it's ample for a not-commercial blog. There are a few oddities comparing the phone app and using the web interface (I find the html on the web version unpredictable, but dead easy from the phone app), but overall, it seems to do a good job, with plenty of storage (as long as you optimise photo size so as not to use up all your free storage).

I keep thinking about setting up a blog or two but keep being put off by not being arsed to delve into the complexities of which host, which package, how much etc., so it'll be interesting to see this thread develop.

As far as I can gather the difference between hosted (i.e. free Wordpress, Blogger etc.) is how much control you have. Many people seem to recommend going with a free site provided you just want to talk and don't want to do anything complex or make money out of it.

Running it yourself on a host you've found gives more freedom and potential commercial gains but does mean a lot more work, I think?

I suppose the other disadvantage of a free host run by a company for who it's not core business (e.g. Google) is whether they suddenly decide to change terms or shut it down.

.
Ahh this is interesting. I was thinking what if it took off and I wanted to make money such as advertising. Would a free host not allow this?

I couldn't say for blog hosts, in general at least. However from my research it's said that if you want to commercialise your blog, independent hosting rather than free hosts are the way to go.

Certainly if you look at things like forum sites, YouTube and the like, if you get the hosting free it's because they're selling advertising on your forum / channel / whatever; if you don't want the advertising, you pay for the hosting.

You'll need an upgrade to a Premium or Business package to upload videos: https://en.support.wordpress.com/accepted-filetypes/

At those prices it may work cheaper to buy yourself a domain name and go self-hosted with a cheap shared web hosting package (one that includes a one-click install of Wordpress) - just as an example - https://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/ - £4.99 per month + domain name cost

Yes, as long as that's really what it is. Google's evil software often shows what look likes that but when you try to click, it becomes a spinner and then reveals one of the hated eyetests. It's like a surprise present but when you unwrap it, it's a cowpat.
Came across this for the first time today - I think I was ordering something on line. Ticked the little box to say I was human, then was presented with 8 small photos and had to click the ones that showed buses. No probs for me (better than some of the hidden letters ones), but I can imagine it might be difficult for some people with poor eyesight.

I fancy having a go at writing a blog but there's one problem. I don't know how to set one up. I've had a look around but don't really understand things like domains and what different providers offer. Should I pay or use a free one? Wordpress seems to crop up as a provider quite a lot.
Any advice and recommendations? Please keep it simple.
Thanks.
Google for me.

I never got on with WordPress, it just wasn't obvious or intuitive.

I've written a fair number via google and its simple.

I dont really like blogs - CGOB is my preferred medium for recording my cycle tours - the Journals read the right way round - however out of curiosity I thought I would try creating a blog on blogspot - simple enough - I tried to update CGOB on my last couple of tours live - never really worked out - the webpages are very sensitive to poor internet connections - I only managed about 10 diary pages before I had to give it best - 2016 I'm still working on at present - blogspot is a pretty responsive interface so a blog might be a way to do something a bit more abbreviated live for those people who are interested

Please, email the site owner and let them know. Often we can't do it ourselves because they put those modern equivalents of "no dogs, no Irish, no cripples" signs on their contact forms too!

Can't remember what it was now, but if I come across one again I'll try to remember to complain.
