If you travel into Derby from London-way on the train, you'll notice the spanking new velodrome-cum-sports centre-cum-concert venue that's going up next to Pride Park iPro Stadium. You'll also notice the wasteground nature reserve next to it.

This was recently the cause of some controversy as the council wanted to put a cycle track on some (about 19%) of it, but bird watchers (who are the only ones allowed to go on the land - the people who flytip are being naughty, apparently) kicked up a fuss that is too expensive for the council in these austeric times, so an eyesore it will remain.

Fast forward to today, when browsing the Cycle Derby website, I noticed an old piece of news: Cycle Derby supports Comic Relief.
"Why do Cycle Derby support the Comic Relief event at Moorways when you can't ride a bike round it?"
Quoth my mother, who until recently was working in the Leisure department at the council: "They were hoping to use the cycle track."

Bah! I'd have taken the girls on one of the Sport Relief rides if the nearest one wasn't in Manchester!

Rant over...

The nature reserve is intentionally left bare without trees etc so as to attract endangered species such as Grey Partridge and Skylark which is has managed to do. An eyesore to you maybe, but not to wildlife.

The birdwatching (RSGB et al) have a powerful lobby in the UK..
It's amazing the power and decisions they can alter and turn to their advantage....
I do a bit of both cycling and bird watching whilst out...

I'd get killed if the Mrs found out

I appreciate that, I've never thought of it as a nature reserve. To me, it's always been a bit of land between Pride Park and the Wyvern that no-one had got round to building on yet. I've seen people riding motocross bikes on it in the past. I'm just disappointed that some compromise couldn't be made for the benefit of more people than just those in the birdwatching societies that have access to the land.

Birdwatchers, *******s the lot of them. Almost as bad as trainspotters. And as for stamp collectors, don't get me started.

Yebbut none of them are as bad those f*cking Cyclists, although, that said, don't get me started on those Mornington Crescent players!! Absolute morons, the lot of them, and get this, they even have their OWN thread on here too!! The Perverts!! :cursing:
