"When I first saw Postie at the door, I growled and it went away... but then the bugger came back again. Obviously, I needed to growl louder, maybe give a bark and that worked, it went away... but then it came back again. Every morning, Postie appears and I need to bark like heck to stop it violating my front door. I've managed it so far but who knows what would happen if I didn't bark."

If it hasn't gone beyond the point of no return, try opening the door and introducing them to each other.

It's also because Postie comes to the door and then goes away again, so he obviously is not welcome.

Let me point out, I am not a dog hater. Quite the opposite, my dad has a dog that I love to bits. My next door neighbour has recently bought a dog and I have great fun talking to it. My dad and my neighbour have one thing in common, they know how to control their dogs, as do most owners. I passed several owners (I'd say 6 or so) walking their dogs down country lanes that same day. I gave them a ting on the bell and they promptly grab their dog or if it was off a lead, they would put in on a lead until I had passed. I always make a point of thanking the ones that do this. However, it is the ones that completely ignore you and just let their mutt run about the lane as it wishes. They usually resort to shouting some useless commands to the dog to get it to come to them (usually laced with some expletives), to which the mutt takes no notice whatsoever. Then when things inevatively go tits-up, it transpires that it is in some way your fault for riding your bike past them. The other favourite is the dogs that run out into the road from remote properites and try to attack you. Again, this is not the fault of the dog. It is doing what all dogs do, protecting their property. The fault lies with the owner with not having the animal chained up. One notable incident was when I went past a farmhouse in a remote village and this dog the size of a donkey (rottwieler or pitbull type) came bolting out with the intention of killing me. It was lucky that it's owner was out cutting his lawn and spotted it, and doubley lucky that that when he told it to stay, it did as ordered. Otherwise it looked like it was going to be dinnertime Fido. I thought it was law now that all dogs had to be muzzled when out in public?

You know what Cranky, I can't help feeling you'd get better results if you took the time to speak to this guy in a friendly way, chew the cud, smile a bit. No one wants to be told what to do by an angry person and I think threatening a pensioner is a bit beneath you, try it, you can't go through life angry with everyone, they're all just trying to do what you're doing, go about their business.

You are obviously a numptee . I was not agressive toward him. I take exception when I am running around a public park minding my own business and I am terrorized by his f'kin mutt. The first occasion I ignored it but it still came for me. The 2nd occasion he had every opportunity to put it on a lead but didn't. There is a sign at the entrance to the park stating that all dogs should be on a lead and all dog walkers are asked to be responsible which includes picking up all the crap their mutts deposit in the park. This OG has form anyway.

Last year I took to carrying my camera as I was so anxious about getting bit again as this OG would suddenly appear in the park whatever time I went running which I varied to try to avoid him. I have footage of his mutt chasing toward me and trying to bite me followed by him abusing me when I try to defend myself from being bitten by it as he has absolutely no control over his mutt what so ever when it is off it's lead.

Both his mutt and him should be put down. Hopefully he doesn't have long to live anyway being an old git.

To ridicule and make light of this dog trying to bite me shows what a pr1ck you really are.

Crankarm, I have the solution. Get a bigger, badder, angrier, hungrier and more vicious dog. Keep it in budgie cage and poke it with a stick every few minutes. That way when you take it out for a run of an evening it'll be ready to chew the face off of anyting that dare approach you. Sorted.

Yeah on the face of it that would be great Brahan , but the down side is I would feel bad about keeping a dog in such conditions solely to intimidate and frighten other people or dogs. I am not a chav or ned.

Actually, I did neither, or at least I didn't intend to come over that way. In fact I rather sympathise with your plight.

Anyway, FWIW my sympathies lie 100% with Crankarm on this one, and it seems to me there's little reason to suppose SOG would prove any more amenable after a chat, given what his behaviour thus far clearly demonstrates about his attitude to other people. By the looks of it, he's an arse. Some people are. And that's why his dog is a vicious little tyke. Some are - and their owners are invariably arses.

Personally, I'd suggest violence. That and a few marbles would give the little shoot something to yap about.

Having said all of which, easy on the insults Cranky - you're among friends who wish you well, even if you are a cantankerous old git.

Nice post sweepea, but less of the cantankerous old git . I'm only 74 years old. No only kidding I'm thirty one. I think you summed this OG up well. I have tried to speak with him but he is genuinely an OG. He just starts shouting and swearing like a care in the community patient when I have asked him to put his dog on a lead. I didn't see him for ages once he knew I had caught him and his mutt on camera. But yesterday I didn't have it on me. The day I don't have it and he is back in the park .
