I had a punture Friday immediately after running through debris left by the rain on the side of the road, (car overtaking so risky to avoid.) Two bits of glass embeded in my Schwalbe Marathon at the back wheel.

So staying out of the grit and leaves is good advice.

When I replaced the old Michelin dynamic 25's on my old commuter with 28 marathons I cut the sidewalls of the old tyres and placed the treaded part inside the new tyres. Done around 1000 miles with no probs so far. You can buy tyre liners that add an additional barrier but old tyres are cheaper!
That tips probably no good for weight weenies but on a get to work bike I'd rather lose a bit of speed than have a problem on the way.
If you try it check that the old tyre inside doesn't start to fold over I think it helped me that my old tyres were 25 and the new 28's.

I've been using Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres (700x28) for 2 years now, and no visit from the fairy. My bike weighs 15kg, I weigh about 85kg, and I ride over glass occasionally, but the tyres have handled it fairly well*

* Now excuse me while I go and do all the usual ritual acts to avert bad luck.
