Phew...what a morning

Taking the cycle path up Langsett Road (it's away from the tram tracks and on an incline so it's easier fopr commuting) - now it is a bit narrow for 2 directions, it's on the left heading uphill, but many (most?) cyclists seem to use it downhill (on their right).

This morning I see a BSO hurtling downhill towards me - and the path narrows for a lamp-post. I instantly recognise the BSO as the one that's locked up outside Tesco every day - with the back brake cable flying free and the cantis stuck out in no-mans land.

He's not slowing and I know he's no chance of slowing so I tuck myself left into the hedge, and behind the lamp-post so he's got room to go by, but unfortunately the human brain seems to steer towards whatever the eye is focused on - in this case me.

My foot hurts now where he hit that, but I was mostly shielded by the lamp-post which he hit just-off square-on. No blood and he got up and insisted he was OK... funny thing is I've been considering whether to do a bit of "random act of kindness" guerilla-bicycle repair by taking along a cable and re-attaching the brakes since it is there every day.

But it doesn't end there - I've had the most ridiculous close pass on tram tracks 3/4 of a mile further up on Holme Lane..there is a flood every morning near the bottom when it's been raining so I move out across the tram tracks and take the centre line past the flood before moving back in. Except this morning, as I pass the flood, I see a silver transit type van hurtling down the wrong side of the road past all the queuing traffic - very bizarre as there are no right-turns to take so not even a cheeky "pass the traffic to get to the junction" - and he doesn't slow down either as I'm on the centre white lines and he hurtles past my left shoulder heading the wrong way.

Is it National Salmoning Day and no-one told me?

Did he check you were ok? and did you ask him why he rides with no brakes? I've only ever done it a couple of times, each time it was the journey from when they broke to get home and it was scary and low speed. But even in the car I spot the disconnected brake arms at the wrong angle and give them a wide berth which you obviously tried to do!

Oooo trip down memory lane -Langsett Road (heard Kelvin Flats has been gone -good riddance) and Holme Lane -leading to Malin Bridge (my mum used to work at the Comet superstore). Not heard those names in ages! That triggered a few memories. Funny thing is though, I can't remember Langsett going uphill..... well, in Sheffield, it's all relative I suppose.

Well, the bike was there outside Tesco this morning

I checked it out - no front brake to speak of either! Bent noodle (that might have happened yesterday!) stopping the cable inner from moving, cable outer about 1/2" out of the brake lever adjuster barrel.

Half a mind to take an old chain and chain the thing up so he can't kill himself (or somebody else) on it - a short distance up from where he crashed is a pedestrian opening between hedges - if a child had run out from there it would have been very nasty
