The mother in law asked a scrappy her workplace had used to pop to her house and collect some stuff, when she got home they'd taken everything metal, including aclothes pole holding the washing up on the line and an air raid shelter.

Despite our protestations (she's used to them for most things she does) she said it want worth going to the police.

So my car may actually be worth something

Not having a go at you personally but maybe people not disposing of their own valuable and recycleable rubbish properly while expecting/hoping the local thieves will remove it for them just encourages it to happen.
I wouldn't say the cost of disposal was 'saved', more like the value of the scrap was lost.

.

A lot of the stuff would have gone to the local incinerator, the rest would have gone to land fill and the local council charged a substantial fee, the area had a large immigrant and student population, we had people knock the door and ask for stuff as well as stuff disappearing overnight, I recon a lot of it got reused.

After saying that nobody had noticed our radiator, we had a knock on the door from a chap with a gold tooth (mini-Summerdays description), wanting to know if we wanted to get rid of it. Apparently he is going to call back tomorrow to find out!
