Well, they play blu-ray disks as well, and the picture is a lot better. Assuming you have an HD TV, that is.

Nope.....dvd is dvd quality. HD dvd doesnt exist anymore because blu ray took the market. There is a MASSIVE difference in picture quality, especially if you have a LED TV

No, DVDs aren't HD. They can be upscaled to give a sort-of pseudo HD, but that's not the same.
EDIT - bugger, cross-posted.

Solid media will be dead in the next few years... you want software for your Mac or iPhone you don't get it on a disk, you get it from the App store.
You want music, the vast majority these days are sold through iTunes, Amazon or Google Play.
The Amazon kindle store is the most popular book store in the world.
With growing video streaming services such as Love Film, Netflix, Sky Store and others it will only be a period of time before all media is provided digitally IMHO.

It's a cheaper distribution method and it makes dealing with piracy easier, the next generation game consoles will be cloud based gaming services as well imho

right ,so blue ray is better than hd which in turn is better than regular dvd ,,the player will b used as a cd player for music source as well linked up to a onkyo av amp that plays pretty well ,so if the blue ray is the way to go can blue ray play music cds as well (as most cd players can )

right ,so blue ray is better than hd

Blue Ray is a HD (high definition) media format as such it can not be better than that. It's equally no better technically than HD-DVD other than becoming the standard format due To the fact it received more backing and support from the movie industry.

Short answer: Yes. If you have an HD TV, you want to watch HD content on it (Sky HD/cable HD/Freeview HD/Blu-ray...), not upscaled standard definition (eg regular Freeview, DVD). Where I've upgraded from DVD to Blu-ray copies of the same films, quality is clearly superior on the latter.
