I'll admit to a fondness for the squarer, round headlighted BMWs of yore.

The new'uns just seem a bit characterless (sorry!)

I have to agree. I really do wish I'd bought a 325i E30 while they were still dirt cheap a few years ago.

I haven't got a BM, but I've still got my first car, although it's sitting at the bottom of my In-Laws garden at the moment.

Here she is.....

I imagine you could easily fit a couple of Sheffield stands on the back wing for when you need to transport you full sussie Halfords Special.

Actually I'm going to need to replace the car in the autumn.

The new one will need to be
Reliable, so Japanese
Under £10k
5 door
load carrier
good fuel economy
cheap to run
low emissions/VED
FWD
comfortable over long distances (1200km, say)

Any suggestions?

You'd be better of with something German rather than Japanese.

Don't rule out Korean either - Hyundai give a 7 year warranty now.

There is nothing inheritantly wrong with cars from the far east. They are generally very reliable although parts can be pricey for some. But German cars ime are stronger, better built, more refined, hold the road better, have better seats, are usually more economical, and are easily capable of at least 300,000 miles. They have become increasingly popular for a reason.
