Having just bought a Whyte Dorset as my main commuter bike I have stripped down and cleaned ‘bodger’ ready for selling off the salvageable bits.

I bought the bike second hand in 1997 or 1998 from the bike shop who used to come to UMIST (now University of Manchester); I forget the name of the shop. The frame was Lavender with Bob Jackson and 531 decals - I believe the colour scheme and decals were original, but have no way of knowing for sure. The Bicycle Doctor in Manchester cold set the drop outs to convert it to Sora a year or so later and added bosses for cable stops on the down tube and I have ridden it as my main commuter since - It has done at least 10,000km (since I started logging mileage in 2011). The headset was replaced some time in the last 10 years, but I don’t have the date. The forks were replaced as the threads on the originals had worn away. The forks on there at the moment are http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/700c-1-i...fork-240-mm-threaded-steerer-black-prod13036/ SJS’s 700c, 1 inch steerer steel touring unicorn forks with 240mm threaded steerer.

The frame really needs a respray and has surface rust where the paint has worn through as do the forks in small areas. The seat post is stuck in the frame and I expect it will take some removing… The frame has the derailleur side rack/mudguard eyelet broken. The frame also has very worn (unusable) threads in the bottom bracket shell. I would suggest the frame needs stripping, sand blasting, the bottom bracket shell cutting closing and rethreading (or replacing) and the eyelets repairing/replacing then respraying.

Some key measurements measured as accurately as I could are as follows - in each case I have measured from the centre of the tubes which meet e.g. top tube I have measured from centre of the seat tube to centre of the head tube.

Top tube 575mm

Seat tube 565mm

Down tube 640mm

head tube 120mm

drop out spacing 127mm

The bars are original and them stem is about 2 years old.

stem length 110mm

bar width 430mm

drop depth 170mm

Frame, forks, stem and bars: £50 (this is a complete stab in the dark as a price - there seems to be a massive price variation on eBay for Bob Jackson 531 frames and this one needs at least £100 of attention…)

Spa Cycles XD2 170mm Square Taper 48/38/28 - inner ring is worn, middle ring is very worn, outer ring has very little wear, has done about 9,000km. £10

Front wheel with hub brake and dynamo - it is a Sturmey Archer hub XL-FDD with DT Swiss Competition double butted spokes and a Chrina Rigida rim - it has done about 9,000km. The rim obviously has no wear on the brake surface. I’m not sure how to judge how much wear is left before the hub brake needs the service kit, but it was working fine on my final commute on it. It was a bit of a fiddle to get the reaction arm collar in just the right place and get the adjustment just right so I’d like it to go to someone reasonably competent rather than stick it on eBay and risk getting a return from someone who doesn’t understand how to fit it. £50

Rear wheel - Tiagra hub and Chrina Rigida Rim hand built by Rick Green cycles in Handforth - has done approx. 3,500km £30

Topeak dual valve type mini pump - 120psi capable if you believe the packaging. Still in original packaging; only used once due to a bit of a packing error! £8

YST Threadless 68mm x 113mm bottom bracket (used in the above frame as it doesn’t need threads in the shell) - has done approx. 850 km £10

Right hand (rear derailleur) - 9 speed 105 STI Brake lever/gear lever - very poor shape cosmetically and missing its hood, but still working! £15

Hebie Bipod 690 stand - I’m really missing this as it kept the bike really stable when loading the panniers or connecting the trailer, but it does require a reasonable gap behind the seat tube on the chain stay. The feet are quite worn and it hasn’t come up very clean, but it still works. £20

Selle Bassano Vuelta - bit grubby underneath and in OK condition, but I found it extremely uncomfortable due to the slope and slippyness (I ride a Selle Italia SLR instead). £15

Will charge postage at cost - not going to calculate each item as I’m hoping that some items will go together. Happy to consider offers, particularly for combinations of parts.
