I'm riding back from a weekend function on Sunday, from bodewyden castle to Wigan . Planning on old coast road ,over Flintshire bridge up to Birkenhead ,then ferry to pier head and on my way again . Any local info on better routes and pitfalls between Liverpool and pier head most welcome , thanks in advance .

Baring in mind the Wirral Way is fine in dry weather, if it's wet it's best avoided if you're on your 'nice' bike. Also remember Eureka Cafe is in the area, you can go there first then get yourself back on to the route above.
85% of that route above is completely car free.

Get to Liverpool via the ferry, the train service is being overhauled just now.

As above. I'd recommend the green way from Chester to Burton, then up to neston, then barnston, arrowe park and to Birkenhead. Fastest way from shotton up to Birkenhead. There is an hourly bike bus from Hamilton Square to Liverpool if your timing is off for the ferry.

Thanks very much for all the advice and info everyone ! I decided to take the route I know best , not hugely scenic . Conners quay , lunch in Chester then helsby frodsham Warrington Wigan . Next time I'm down there (September) I'll definitely try your suggestions out , thanks again
