OK - So I've decided to keep bodger for the moment, lavish some attention on him and do the Edinburgh Cycles intensive maintenance course.

But I've come unstuck when trying to order the threadless BB - I have no idea how long the axle needs to be; I'm planning to use this chainset. I've looked at Sheldon Brown's BB Sizes page, which has lots of information all of which would be good if I was replacing like for like, but I have no idea what I should be doing as what's in there at the moment is a hollowtech style BB/Chainset - according to the table that makes it a 118mm axle, but should I be replacing with the same width, all the older variants (which would presumabley include square taper) are down at 110-113mm.

I would say standard Shimano road triple so 113mm (JIS taper)

Well, all the parts arrived and I have fitted a Spa Cycles XD-2 Triple Chainset and a 113 mm JST threadless BB. However, I can only get the front derailleur to get the chain between the small and middle chain rings - I'd say that it is between 3 and 5mm short of achieving the large chain ring (even with the limit screw right out), this means I'd need somewhere between a 103 and 107mm axle however the smallest I can find is 110...

I wonder if I'm missing something obvious or have simply put it together wrong. Its somewhat frustrating that there is only vertical adjustment on my braze on adapter, if I could adjust horizontally I could sort it out in now time at all...

The Spa XD-2 is copy of the Sugino - and has a different recommended length BB to the FC-2303 you lnked previously.
I don't always trust Spa's recomendations though - on another copy of the Sugino (the Stronglight Impact Triple) they recommend a 110 mm but Stronglight themselves say 115 mm.
That's not to say it won't work with a "non-standard" length BB.... but it depends on the front mech.

I couldn't get hold of the FC2303 with 48T outer (which I needed to fit in the SKS Chainboard that I ended up failing to get to fit...) But if anything a 113 seems far too long and 110 wouldn't help unless all of the 3mm is taken of the side with the chainrings on.

I suppose I could file down the axle to get the chainset further on, but that doesn't feel like the best way forward!

A cunning plan occurred to me! I swapped the bottom bracket sides around and added a washer around the shell which pulled the axle a bit further in on the chainset side - this has done just enough to be able to use all 3 chainrings!
