It's a v sorry state of affairs when these things happen. I've had a similar experience and it does leave you deeply worried about the state of today's 'society'.

I think it is the "car effect" being in an insulated box apart from others allows us not to engage with our fellow travellers. If they hadn't been in a car they'd have stopped, if you'd been ill on a train or bus or they'd been pedestrians it would have been different. Decent folk the lot of them probably, it's the car that's the factor that makes humans behave like this.
I drive badly and impatiently at times and behave in ways in a car I would never do otherwise, we are all capable of this, I suspect.

I'd have been the first one to stop and shield ya and come and see if I could do anything to help another fellow human being.
I'm real sorry no one stopped for you .You just have to hope that one day those people will need someone's help and won't get any.Might make them stop and think about how selfish they are .

I don't understand people's mentality these days but it scares the hell out of me.

That's awful Twiggy I hope you are OK. I came of a few years back and everybody stopped except the offending WVM. Another time I came of it was an Ambulance job; I don't recall who stopped then except for them stopping me from just walking home, the next morning I discovered why.

Have you broken your thumb then?

I got knocked of and broke my finger last summer. Had to have it pinned to help it heal. Apparently this is very common practice now (!)

I have had three "offs". One where someone drove into the back of me when I was turning right - about 8 people stopped to help me. The second one was where I was cyling over a toucan crossing and driver jumped red lights. Nobody stopped - except the driver. Third one where I was doored and broke finger - nobody stopped except owner of offending door! It just seems to be hit and miss as to whether or not people will help.

I have to say if I ever see a crash or anything I always hang around to see if I can help but there's nowt so queer as folk is there?!

Good luck at the clinic - bring a newspaper or a book - my longest wait so far has been 4 and a half hours. By the time I got in my arse hurt more than my finger!!

That's awful Twiggy... I can't imagine not stopping ever (excluding an obvious threat to my own person safety) and this situation definitely doesn't sound like that. I hope they are now feeling extremely guilty about not stopping. I hope it heals quickly.

I think he'll eventually get caught pulling the same tricks after actually hitting someone, and get into a lot of trouble.

That seems like almost exactly what happened to me a few years back, but a lot more cars went past, and pedestrians laughed... at least you are getting the sympathy you deserve here - the responses I got from some particular twunts on another part of the forum were less impressive. If I see someone lying immobile in the road, I stop and help. Simple. There's no ifs and buts.

However, what people here don't seem to be blinded to is the fact that you could have been a decoy for a carjacking/theft. As a driver you have a split second to assess a situation and make a quick decision about stopping and personal safety after stopping.

Would I stop as a driver? I really don't know. It would depend on a number of factors including the area and the ability to make my escape if it turns bad.

As others have commented it's not a reflection on current society it has been going on since the New Testament was written.

There were 1200 carjackings in the UK in 2002 (latest unverified figures I can find). I have no idea whether the rate is up or down in the last six years. 100 carjackings a month and only the most serious make the news. The rest seem to go un-reported.

All of them involve some sort of distraction; from rear end shunt, to "broken down" car to simply being waved down. So unless you are telling me that you personally know the circumstances of a potential 7200 carjackings using someone lying in the road, while extremely risky in itself, is a distinct possibility and not without zero probability. Quite apart from the fact that tactics on the part of the criminals will evolve as people become aware of their methods.
