From 8 if they are bright (and I bet they are with you as a Dad..) try the classic stuff - Louisa M Alcott, M Twain, etc

Shucks, you're too kind! Reading the suggestions, I realise my kids have actually read a lot of this stuff, and are now officially much better read than I thought!
