You can do it by credit card without pre-registering. The 24 hours will start from when you take out the first bike.

The official site says that you can just turn up and pay by credit card, there is no need to register first.

I'm not sure that taking one for a full day is particularly cost effective, I think the idea is to take the bike to another docking station and then hire another when you need it again.

I think the OP knows this, but just to clarify for others:

When you pay the £1 you get 24 hour access to the bikes. Within that 24 hours you can take the bikes as often as you need to, and as long as each trip is less than 30 minutes you won't pay any more than the initial £1.
