“There is much, much more we can do to make London one of the great cycle cities of the world,” Mr Johnson said. “Believe me, I have that commitment.”
Several members of the London Assembly claimed that cycle safety was being compromised by the Mayor’s commitment to smooth traffic flows. He said that the two goals were not incompatible. Despite burnishing his personal commitment to cycling, Mr Johnson caused uproar among cyclists by claiming that 62 per cent of people killed or seriously injured while riding a bicycle were breaking the rules of the road when they were knocked off their bikes.

what does "breaking the rules of the road" actually mean? It is not the same as breaking the law.

I guess it means filtering up the inside of stationary traffic etc.

Nothing wrong with filtering, what's Boris on about, where the hell did such a precise figure come from? Pretty insulting to relatives of the dead.

RedRider

Pulling through
Boris Johnson shot through a red light and almost busted into me from the side as I pulled away through a green one night. Not the first time I've posted the story here but it's true.
It was before he was mayor and we both grabbed fistfuls of brake to avoid collision. He seemed tired/emotional, offered his apology accepting full responsability and rode off. I don't like the bloke but must admit he was disarming, so much so I forgot to insult him.
I rode home thinking of cutting things I could've/should've said but reading the OP now, 'hypocrite' is one of the milder words springing to mind.

Can someone who goes through the Elephant & Castle regularly fill me in on why it's such a problem? I have to say I've cycled through it a few dozen times without seeing any problem, but I'm obviously missing something if it gets so many complaints.

I think he's probably right - only the other day a cycling MP jumped a red light when an Addison Lee Minicab bumped into the back of her...

Mr Johnson, who is often pictured cycling around the capital, told the first Mayor's Question Time meeting this week that "the increase in cycling has not necessarily been accompanied by an increase [in an] observance of the rules of the road". He added: "It is very important, I think people should be aware of the high proportion. I have seen a figure of I think 62 per cent... of cyclist KSIs [people killed and seriously injured] are associated with some infraction by the cyclist themselves of the rules of the road. That is very sad."

He did not disclose the source of his figures at the meeting on Wednesday.
