Mainly because it puts me off the bike that this can happen so soon, i think it will always be in the back of my mind it will happen again and also because it has damaged the paintwork on the chain stays and looks a mess

Looking at the state of the chain and cassette, you haven't been maintaining it well. You won't get a new bike, and you will be lucky to get a mech hanger FOC, as looking at it, maintenance has been low.

Sorry, but that's my opinion.

Oh, and the mech looks like you've knocked it,look at the lower edge scuff, and those on the Altus badge. Have you knocked or dropped the bike. If you have, then you need to check the gears, and you could have introduced a fracture in the hanger.

And mine too.

And the bike on the whole has little to no effect on the strength of a mech hangar.

Were you climbing a hill when it happened? (or at least, in a low gear?). Looks to me like the derailleur touched the wheel, which caused it to get trapped and break the hanger. If that's the case, it's possibly because your gear adjustment was too low, or the derailleur had been knocked (has happened to me). I think it's just "one of those things". Nothing to do with the bike itself, a new/different bike won't increase, or decrease the chance of it happening again.

I had similar last year (first commute of 2012!) I had to pay for a new hanger, rear mech and spoke, they didn't charge for labour though. The chap told me that it was likely that the hanger or mech had taken a knock and when i put it into a low gear the mech got sucked into the wheel.
I think you've done well to get the parts replaced FOC.
I'll also add my 10 pence worth on the state of the chain etc - you need to clean and lube them regularly, more so when wet and the roads are covered in cr@p. The Mickle method takes a minute or two once a week.

To the OP...same thing happened to my bike - rear derailleur bracket broke off - but as already mentioned, it's designed to snap off to prevent damage to you and/or your frame.

Does seem weird that it should break off so soon. Evans should sort it for free.

friend had this happen to him.

mind you, we were at the top of an hill in the lakes,, i'd already done a full 360 over my head on the hire bike, after some near misses in the moss  ( before a real man pointed out, lower the seat!).. and he'd SMACKED HIS MECH very hard into a rock...

this is when you suddenly think "uh oh, what tools have we got?"..... we made a single speed and limped back.. luckily mainly downhill
