I have the chance of a ribble winter trainer and am thinking of replacing my current "winter & commuter" bike which is just too nice and I never want to leave it anywhere! (Am also loosing my secure indoor parking at work  )

It sounds pretty rough and to my untrained eyes looks like it may need a new front crankset, cassette & chain and maybe bottom bracket.

That's where I'm stuck, it's currently Shimano Tiagra 9 speed kit and from what I've read I can fit a 10 speed crank with 10 speed chain (keeping the rest 9 speed) but what BB is it? English thread and outboard BB cups fit?

The frame dictates the type of BB.

Need to know make and model for that

You can fit a 10 speed crankset and still run a 9 speed chain if you want, maybe save a little.
Also, you could probably just replace the chainrings, save again (assuming you even want to  )...
Go onto Ribbles bikebuilder, select the winter trainer and see what BB options are available.

I recently got a ribble winter frame (second hand) and emailed ribble to find out what thread bb it used and they said English straight away, they didn't need any more info about the frame to say it used English.
Hope this helps.
