So... old style Shimano bb in 1988 Raleigh Randonneur. Tired of using a stout screwdriver and mallet on the lockring. So looking for a recommendation for a decent tool for this rather than a basic 'C' spanner?

I like Skol

A Minging Manc...
Why?

Do you mean a cotterless BBwith a spindle, races and cones? Like this:

574727

If so this is what I use which works well:

574728

You should definitely find the old all in one multi spanner at flea market or boot fair. When they are on of course. Small mallet a d screwdriver work perfectly too though as long as you don't batter the living daylights out of it.

And that's just the screwdriver.

If it's a real Shimano one, it has six cutouts and there is a special £20 tool.

They can look really nice when fitted with the right tools and not chewed up. This is a BB-7400 with a BB-7700 lockring (the 7400 lockring is black and a bit nasty).
