I think I'm about done - I will start like this next week (I need to wait for all this to arrive) and then will start the commute. I have a weekend dayshift so roads nice and quiet to do proper run  Let's do this. I can save myself 50 miles a week on straight commute - so that's not a lot admittedly, but if I could do 100% commuting all year by bike then thats 2600 miles a year I could save diesel money on, and lose weight with  Makes it part of the routine of work too, and I really fancy the idea of a nice ride home after a 12 hour night shift. Not sure I'll feel the same when it's slashing down, but we'll see

Sounds good- I take it that's 5 miles each way? Lovely distance to do daily.
I would add mudguards to that list if you want to do it every single day.

Use to love riding my motorbike home after a long and stressful shift  But good luck on the commuting, weather won't always be sh*t3..

Commuting goodies can become an endless task.
There is always more trinkets for low light & winter riding. Summer not so much.
Watch out for those end of isle sales at outdoor shops. They have no end of flashy & sparkly bits of plastic to make you more like a Christmas tree as the yule tide season approaches!

Yes I will get mudguards as well - as soon as I work out what ones I actually need...

And yes, commute is around 5.5 miles each way

Add to the above, Karrimor 30L Rucksack.

I'll try the rucksack method to start with - my one is old, very old.

Make sure you stick some basic tools/inner tubes in your bag. Waterproof overshoes are very useful as are a couple of pairs of gloves (thin/thicker).

i id 5 miles each way constantly for a while, switched it up to between 5 + 5.7 miles and lately been hitting a 10 mile each way trip!

the bug bites and you get more expensive gear to go with it.

If you use even a rather conservative version of the tax man's calculations for vehicle mileage, let's say 40p per mile, 11 miles per day is £4.40. If you did 2600 miles that's £1040. Now, it probably isn't that much as this includes considerations for insurance etc which you still have to pay anyway*, but it puts it in context.

My main saving when commuting was parking at the station. My work has funny hours but if I arrived at the station before 10.30, which I mostly did, I had to pay £5.50 for parking the car - after that you can find somewhere on the road but for a long time I was going in quite early. Even with a short commute and not going in every day I saved loads.

It's so satisfying!!!

*EDIT if you still have a car, obvs
