I know you can buy ready-made transporting boxes, but they are expensive, and as it's only a one-off I was wondering what ideas you had.

I want to send a not-very-expensive bike from London to Galway, and I don't mind paying 30 or so quid for a decent box to stick it in.

Any ideas, or maybe couriers who will pack your bike as well as carry it?

Thanks.

Visit any Halfords store on a Friday. They get all their bikes shipped to the store on a Friday and unbox them for assembly. They will glady give you a box (thick cardboard) free.

Or try any other bike shop.

cardboard bike box from local bike shop - pack it well though.

Parcel Force charge about £26 for a bike to UK address - Ireland will be a fair bit more I would guess.
