I always wear underwear, in forty years of cycling I've never worn padding, my thirteen mile round trip commute is done in my work clothes, including boxer shorts, when I'm out on a Sunday ride, typically between fifty and seventy miles, I wear cycle gear with unpadded tights or shorts and sports trunks.

IME it's seams that cause damage - there's no reason why a flat piece of material under padded shorts should cause any problems; in fact probably the opposite, that's why many people wear two pairs of socks under their hiking boots to reduce the chances of blisters on their feet. So if you wear anything, as long as the seams are out of the way of your delicates then you'll be fine.

BUT - I used to get saddle sore when I rode a lot a few years ago, but this time I altered my bike to better fit me, which included moving the saddle forwards by at least four inches to get my knees over the tops of the horizontal pedals. And since I did that I've not even had the slightest hint of saddle fatigue - it's a squashy touring saddle which I now sit near the back of, whereas I always used to slip forward onto the nose.

+1 on the its the seams, thats why I'm always careful about what underwear I wear when I'm cycling.

I always wear underwear when cycing, even with the club kit. I just find that it is there incase I fall off and damage my clothing, so I can at least have something on in hospital.
It is also an extra layer in winter.

Totally agree, only it's 50 years of cycling, a good few of commuting in that, and plenty of longer rides.

As said above (dave r again) seams are a bad idea, but M&S underpants etc. don't usually have them.

Denim (ie jeans) isn't too clever for long rides, I've always found general sports shorts and tops are best.

Here's another reason not to wear gruds under lycra, VPL! This NSFW photo of me was taken backstage a few years ago and is not only possibly NSFW, it also won't help your hangover one little bit, but it does serve as a stark warning. I should add that I was backstage because I was in the band, not because I was wearing lycra to the show for fun...

It's NSFAnything. All negatives / copies of files should be kept safely locked away.
