If anyone's arsed I've begun a trawl of historic Raleigh literature to try and narrow down appropriate models for this project; so far it seems that the recessed caliper nuts were introduced by Raleigh in 1983 on their high-end / lightweight road bikes and they trickled down into the range beneath from that point, although I'm not sure (yet?) of the point when they became standard across all their products.

That'd fit in with my Road Ace, the Equipe is a fair bit younger but still has the nutted calipers.
