The only problem I have riding a bike over here and it's a habit I can't get rid of is using my right foot as the pedal foot to set off. Even when I stop, my natural reaction is to unclip my left foot. Try as I might I just can't break this habit -which really is annoying when you cycle on the right side all the time.

I'm assuming I got this habit from growing up in the UK and using my left foot to rest on a kerb.....

Double edged sword. If you do lock the front wheel you'll go over the bars.

Nah, if its locked you are sliding, its when it really digs in and doesn't break traction you go over the bars, I often lock the front when off road, partially cos its fun and partially to have some experience of what is like in case it happens for real.

Off road maybe, but my on road experience is that once the front locks the rear wheel lifts - weight transfer.

Road & MTB I have left/rear, right/front and vice versa on BMX and 26"ers (or just right/rear with no front)

My Kona's got right front left rear, but I'd say the cable brackets on the frame are fitted for the other way round - the bends in the cabling would be a lot more natural if it was left front right rear.

What Landslide said.

Here in Canuckistan, NA, and most of the rest of the world, it's L/f, R/r.

All to do with signaling hand.

I have vague memories of getting used to it when i first emigrated.

I remember reading recently that's mandatory that all bikes sold in the UK are fitted right side front, left side rear.

what you do after you get the bike though is completely up to you.

Just to note - We have two decathlon bike, both of which are set-up normally, as were the other ones we test rode in the shop. Presumably it's about how they do them up un store?

I have a mixture of left and right arrangements on my bikes and have never bothered to standardise them. Generally it's not a problem going from one to the other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Riding a fixed wheel, I've learnt to unclip either side. It's very liberating when you're no longer locked into only being able to put one foot down.

Same here. I couldn't even tell you which bikes are which way around. I tend to break evenly initially and, if more is required, then it's on feel but, to be honest, I try to avoid situations where I might start having to grab handfuls.

Its not a problem if you are aware of it, I have never ridden a bike with that arrangement, maybe I should have checked before accelerating to 15 mph in a shop ;) once I had realised and adapted it was fine, just a surprise !
