I'll be riding in the Italian mountains next week and want to get some better quality brake pads for fast descents. My current 105 brake pads are showing quite a bit of wear anyway.

Having read a few reviews, I'm leaning towards the Kool Stop Dura pads. Could even be persuaded to go for the pricier Swiss Stop Greens.

However, I'm not clear what type of pad holders I would need for them, they don't seem to come in a set. Currently, I use the stock Shimano pads that don't have the facility to add inserts to them. Think these the fellows:

Any thoughts on which pads to use and what type of holder to compliment them them with for a standard set of 105 caliper brakes on an Alu rim (Fulcrum Racing 5)

Cheers

Personally, I like these;

They wear quick in wet conditions though (although they're kinder on wheel rims too). I think the holders should fit your brakes, you may need to decide whether they compliment them though :smile:

I've never tried Swiss Stop, but I find the performance of the above is on a par with Kool Stop salmons.

I love the swisstops green high performance ones. Use them on my road bike, and the ceramic version on my tourer (sue to CSS rims). Got 5,000km of wet/winter riding out of the last set on my road bike.

the pads don't come with brake cartridges because the cartridges are re-useable... you undo the screw, slide the old pad out (aka fight to remove it), slide the new one in, put the new screw in and away you go.

Thanks. Anything similar from Wiggle or similar that can deliver quickly? There must be an industry standard of pad holders, as few of the pad manufacturers make their own holders. It just seems difficult to find the holders on their own

I get mine at the LBS, but Fibrax sell direct;

I've found these ok too;

...although I've not ridden with them much in the wet.

Thanks for the feedback all. I went with the Shimano shoes and the Kool Stop pads, £35 for two sets after usual Wiggle discounts. Others were tempting, but the reviews for the Kool Stops were overwhelming, which will hopefully give me some confidence when hurtling down the Mortirolo and Stelvio next week :hyper:
