Who likes it? It's a bit beyond me and I'm wondering if it's a UK regional thing...I'm from the north west and we've never had it.

Does anyone know any decent recipes so it doesn't turn out like grey mushy wallpaper paste?

You're not using grey bread are you?

I think it's a stodge, personally, and a throwback to when Britains cooking was sneered at, deservedly.
We're better at it now thanks to people like Jamie, Hugh et al.

Bread sauce is lovely.

It's just milk, an onion studded with cloves, bayleaf, nutmeg and breadcrumbs. And some double cream and butter.

Cut an onion in half and stick a dozen or so cloves in it. Simmer it in half a pint of milk for five or so minutes, then let the onion steep in the milk for about an hour. Remove the cloves and slice the onion, unless you want to be posh, in which case just bin the onion.
Next, mix in some breadcrumbs (I prefer crusty wholemeal), until the mixture is just this side of sloppy, add a large knob of butter, some salt and black pepper and bake in the oven in a pyrex dish or whatever.

Another NWer who never had it. A very good cook made it for me specially one year.
If I never had it again I wouldn't think I was missing out.

I cannot believe my eyes have rested on the above assembled vowels and consonents sprouted before me.

YOU DON'T LIKE BREAD SAUCE?

Why it is the food of the gods; along with nice, succulent slices of turkey breast lubricated lovingly with gravy, and accompanied with mashed potato, veggies and stuffing.

It's gone MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD this world

Cubists recipe is spot on. Christmas dinner would be nothing without it. In fact I could just have turkey cranberry sauce(homemade) bread sauce and roast ham for my christmas dinner and be deliriously happy!!!

I'm originally from the NW and it was always a staple of my mum's Christmas dinner (she was born and bred in Gorton). It is now a staple of mine - oobliay the turkey, I'd be happy with just bread sauce and roast potatoes for my Christmas dinner

I've nothing against bread sauce, it's the Turkey I can't understand. If it is so good then why don't we eat it all year round?

Personally I prefer meat with some flavour on Christmas day.
