I remember a very odd discussion on another forum about breathing and whether there was anything that could be gained from thinking about breathing techniques for training etc...

Anyway, just popped into my inbox was the following - it's either a candidate for Private Eye's pseud's corner or very, very interesting, I am not sure which!

;)

Take a deep breath
A conference at Tate Modern, in association with the London Consortium
15 - 17 November 2007
Take a deep breath is an interdisciplinary conference on the social,
cultural and scientific ramifications of breathing. It will explore the
influence of breath on the work of various theorists and practitioners and
encourage a critical discussion by featuring talks, visual art projects,
performances, film screenings, and musical events.

"Breathing is a vital practice, yet most of us hardly ever think of the process."
Yes, that's because most of us have got a life.

It may finally be time to despair. If there are people able to avoid making any real contribution to society by engaging in this unspeakable claptrap then it is time for that society to exercise some intolerance.

Put this thread in soapbox and award a prize to the best permanent solution to dealing with these idiots and others like them.

Unless the email you received was a wind up (Please let it be so). ;)

I did yoga for a few months, and us beginners spent about twenty minutes of the first lesson learing to breathe 'properly', so this may not be a joke.

...the role of heavy breathing in porn films..?!? That would work as a paper, and the empiricial research would be quite fun!

....what free diving tells us of the importance of breath? er some people can hold it for a long time?!?

No I think that's a total load of cultural studies w@nk. Pity. Cultural studies can be a great area.

Don't knock it, you'd be suprised how many people don't breathe deeply or properly in these over stressed times. Next time you feel stressed or harrassed and something is annoying you, focus on your breathing and you'll probably find that you are holding your breath. Also lots of people that exercise gasp rather than breath deeply. Its all about the diaphragm and not the chest.

Supposedly thirty minutes a day of calm deep breathing would make us all better people.

Righty, where are my birkenstocks, hemp trousers and lentils.....

Exactly, breathing properly is an essential, practiced, tarined part of the ability to perform any physical exertion properly.

It is NOT any damn thing to do with

"Recent environmental and ethical developments are calling for a rethinking of the value of breath and its manifestations in culture and beyond."

For god's sake!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhhhh better now.

Philistine!

Art is about breaking barriers and looking at new perceptions. Why should artists be restricted by the temporal barrier of an institutionalised date?

Actually I fancy submitting a paper.....................

"The breathing sounds of the British workmen and the final cost of the job".

The practised intake of breath as they estimate a job. The deeper the intake the more it will cost!

Are here any regional variations etc.
