I've been looking at the Breezeblockers Tornado or Storm hand protectors for the winter commute. In terms of blocking the cold frosty air from my little pinkeys they seem just the ticket.

However, at £30 a pair when a similar genuine item for my olde BMW motorbike cost only £12 is a bit, shall we say, extortionate.

Does anyone know of an alternative make of a similar product, or will I end up chopping squash bottles in half and making my own?

Unless you have Raynauds, then you might be going ott ? A decent pair of cycling gloves and you'll be fine. Don't forget, the lardy person on a motorbike isn't generating heat, you on a bicycle are. My Altura Night Visions were absolitely fine in -15 and a foot of snow. I find them too warm unless it's way below zero. some folk, however find them a bit cool.

Is this your first winter cycling - what I'd do is have a few pairs of gloves and maybe some silk liners if you find them too cold ?

I got long digits, the proverbial pianists fingers and the tips really do
Suffer. I may try the Altura gloves as sealskins aren't that toasty, but I was thinking these guards would allow me to get away with a lighter more tactile glove.

Glove liners - the thin, silky ones. About £10 on Amazon IIRC. I think Lidl/Aldi did some a while back.

I, too, suffer badly with cold fingers on really cold days (long fingers!).
Inner gloves + sealskinz lobster gloves make finger pain bearable.
Also got some hand-warmer gel pads - not used them yet.

+1 on these - i've got a pair and they're super warm. not bulky in the slightest which allows my dainty little hands good feel on the bike

I have an old pair of Sealskinz bike specific gloves and I have found them to be ideal. I had frost/ice on them once but had no idea until I saw them, Warm, but for use on the coldest of days. Aldi gloves for the meantime, full finger of course. You get what you pay for, as in life.

Get yourself to aldi tomorrow. Their winter cycle gloves are absolutely first rate....I have a couple of pairs to allow one to dry out. Decathlon also do silk glove liners for a couple of quid, I wear these under mitts on autumn days when the Aldi ones are just too warm.
