Longest ride to date today and loved it. Glad I checked the wind forecast and started from Brighton, the headwind was pretty strong on the way to Worthing so it was a lovely tailwind for the return. Outward was mainly on the little ring, back was mainly on the big ring and a lot easier. I can also confirm that bib shorts might make you look like a Saturday afternoon wrestler (showing my age?) but they are the most comfortable things ever on a bike.

I used to live in Worthing about 15 years ago and worked in Hove. I used to drive and hadn't got into cycling back then, but did try it on a craggy old mountain bike a few times regardless. It's a lovely ride along the seafront path that runs all the way down to Lancing from Shoreham. I cycled London to Paris and back again via a very protracted route earlier this year, and it was the first time I'd used that path in over a decade. It was a joy to see that scenery again, and I note it runs alot further now as a dedicated bike path.
Congrats on acheiving your longest distance to date though. Any plans for your next ride?

It is a nice ride and most of it is on dedicated bike paths. Not sure on next long rides but have tried a shortish (8 mile) and longer (18 mile) loop from home. Both have a couple of good (??) hills. I'm trying to get out on a regular basis to get some miles in my legs and get my fitness up. The good news is I'm enjoying being back on a bike, the bad news is that I'm already thinking about a road bike to go alongside the CX.

Absolutely! I got onto the shore path past Lancing and it was like hitting a wall. I was pushing hard to stay at 10mph, on the return leg I was spinning along doing 18mphthink there is a permanent force 12 headwind blowing towards Brighton

Just read this well done rockpig and its comforting to know that I am not the only one down here on the South coast battling the wind as I am in Eastbourne.

Us too, near Chichester, but frequently in Bognor, Littlehampton, Worthin, Portsmouth, they're often all the same for headwinds!

You are right about always blowing a hooley down Worthing way, I ride in and around Worthing most week day mornings... Ride East and it's usually lovely..... Turn around at the pier and head back to ferring and it can be very different.. Riding west along the prom tucked in behind the beach huts can be ok but get out in the open and it can be like hitting a brick wall....

Thanks but I was just visiting. I fancied a ride along the coast and Brighton to Worthing looked like a nice ride. I will do it again, and next time I'll be expecting the wind.
