Brilliant overtake....but um maybe not there

A superb overtake by the motorist but he misses something pretty important. A good demonstration on why you shouldn't overtake on zig zag lines approaching a crossing.

I spoted the old gent and slowed but he waved me on so I thanked him and pedaled on.

There is a crossing outside a school like this. I will always take primary as I approach it due to my shift finishing at school knocking-out time. If I dont drivers have been known to overtake and nearly take out kids on the crossing. I think most drivers realise why I do it now, and I'm not the only cyclist who does it there either.

Fair play skimmed past that on the way to the link. Just when I watched it I expected to see the ped cross.

To be fair the pedestrian had not moved on to the crossing (at which point you must give way). Of course whether the car would have stopped anyway is a different matter. The pedestrian had their wits about them so standard fare and a bit of a non-event really. Lots more worse examples out there of vehicles going through crossings whilst pedestrians are halfway over.

Didn't look like that overtake was on the zig-zags. The council really should do something about the pavement parking where the zig-zags are.

The pedestrian is not on the crossing there fore does not have priority - to claim priority the ped mus put one foot on the crossing. HC 195

"do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching" is particularly important

PK99, because the overtake manoeuvre wasn't completed, ie the car wasn't close to being back in it's normal road position, by the time he entered the zig-zag marked road that the rider/pedestrian have become unsighted of each other approaching the crossing, had the car overtaken more slowly or had initiated the overtake latter it could lead to, needless, information depravation for 2 people.

When vehicles are left turning from Church Lane (30mph limit) to Tawney Road quite often the vehicles following will overtake while the left turning car decelerates for the junction. Too many times I have seen peds being ignored at this crossing because of the road layout, poor driving, and speeding drivers (Often doing 50mph). Also the crossing is unlit at night and leads to a playing field. Very frustrating.
