Good read, thanks HJ.

I'd be happy to contribute towards a Road Fund if it meant we were provided with excellent cycle facilities.

You mean, like roads? We certainly need a lot less cycle paths, even if they weren't of such outstandingly bad quality.

I must admit my thoughts on this have changed slightly.

For the likes of you and me, yes the roads are perfect. No question. However, to get families, teenage girls (Beauty and the bike thread), kids, and generally those of a more nervous nature out on the roads, I think we do need more cycling infrastructure. However, it would need to be provided sensitively to ensure that those who choose to ride on the roads can without abuse.

This would all have to be done along side new legislation that ensured that cyclists gain more protection on the roads.

As someone else mentioned elsewhere, we place too much emphasis on teaching our children how to cross roads safely, on making life easier for drivers (remembering I am one too), i.e. the onus is on everyone else to keep safe, not on drivers. The time has come to teach drivers their responsibilities and to make them pay for mistakes. Until then, the culture of car is king will remain.

Someone in power with real guts is needed.

"If I was made to display a 'Tax disc' by paying a 'Road Fund Licence' fee to ride my bike, I would ride it in the centre of the carriageway at 15 mph where no bugger could get past."

I'm NOT joking. :becool:

I'm sure this is just a wheez to justify the chelsea tractor. Any Road Fund would need a Road Board, which in today's quango-lingo we'd have to call Off-Road.

A mandatory annual license for road use that included 3rd party insurance would be worth considering.

Not In My Back Yard.

Consider...

Every bicycle that is capable of being ridden on the road will need a Licence Disc to prove the owner has paid.:laugh:

How much will the system COST ??
Who will police it ??
Will it encourage bicycle ownership ??

I cannot put in words how rediculous this idea is.....

I agree, jimbo. The Police can't even police the horrendous driving on our roads as it is, so where would they find the time to check every bike they see?

However, I cannot agree with your ridiculous spelling of 'rediculous':biggrin::biggrin:

No, just ones actually on the road.

A lot less than the one the already exists for cars

There's a clue in the question there if you look hard enough

jimboalee said:

It will encourage responsible, courteous and considerate bicycle owners. The others can go hang.

As ridiculous as putting even more untraceable, non-accountable cyclists on the road looks to drivers perhaps?

Any change looks ridiculous to people with no vision.

Thought experiment. If the police gave up altogether and didn't try to police the roads, if cars didn't require licenses and plates and insurance, would the standard of driving get

a) better
 worse
