Group of us are spending one night in Bristol (3 May) before cycling back to london on the K&A canal.

Can the panel recommend any decent real ale pubs for us to crawl round? We will be staying in the Best western, Victoria square.

Coronation tap in Clifton! It's a Bristol institution and an optimum time to go with the students being away. Awesome, traditional cider. You could have a great pub crawl round Clifton and back to town. Definitely avoid the waterfront, the berkley and most of the bars on Park Street. Alternatively the Old Duke, Clamdoger trow (might have spelt that wrong) and Naval something or other are together in the old part of town and nice, the duke has jazz (it might be the pub mentioned above). It's a shame I don't have access to our old uni alphabet pubcrawl route!

If you're venturing beyond the city centre... I'm rather fond of The Windmill on Windmill Hill, near Bedminster station. It serves Bristol Beer Factory Ales. And pies. The Albert, also in Bedminster, used to be one of the best jazz venues anywhere, but I think it's now just a bog standard music pub. Don't know the city centre well, but I quite like a scruffy, comfy place in town called Start the Bus - up the end of Corn Street I think...

The Barley Mow, in the Dings area, quite near to Temple Meads is excellent.
Serving Bristol Beer Factory ale and great food.

Don't answer any unexpected knocks on your hotel room door late at night. A friend of a bloke I work with did and was held hostage for a cpl of hours while one of the gang went helped himself to his bank account with his cash card.
This was the big hotel down by the water I believe, don't know if it is the one you are staying in.

Was riding round Bristol last weekend - a few of these will need googling for directions.

The miners arms. Lovely old boozer out of the centre. Near the urban farm.
The Merchants arms. Lovely Bath Ales pub - quiet and with a lot of charm.
Portullis. At the top of a steep hill. Very different. 2 floors, good beer and the barman played the pixies a lot
Hope and Anchor. Lovely pub very near town. Good food, chilled out, candles on tables and loads of ale.
Nova Scotia - Very busy when we went, so drank the beers outside and chilled out on the dock.
Grain Barge - Bristol beer factory boat.. Very modern, very popular, lovely beer.

Hope it helps. Great town for real ale in my brief experience.

My end of town! The Windmill's a nice boozer with good food & beer, but the Albert is a sad imitation of former glories. The music seems mainly to be karaoke now *shudder*.

The Best Western referred to is in Clifton, so I echo the suggestion for cider at the Coronation Tap (which gets v. busy), also head to the Portcullis, which may be tiny, but has a fantastic selection of real ales.

The Avon Gorge hotel has an average, overpriced bar with a fantastic garden overlooking the suspension bridge.
