A roadside diner in Georgia where my wife and I had stopped off for breakfast on our road trip. I ordered eggs over easy, steak, hash browns, grits and bacon from the friendly waitress who was the very essence of what you'd imagine a Southern waitress to be. Then a ordered a side order of ham.
"Say wha' now?"
"Can I have some ham please?"
"You want whaaat?"
"Can .. I .. have .. a .. side .. order .. of .. HAM .. please?"
"Unnnh-huh sugar, I'm just not gettin' that funny accent"
At which point my wife interjected -
"He wants a side order of ham"
"OH! You want ha-yem!" and she waddled off, chuckling.
Ham, pronounced "ha-yem"
