A Mancunian friend of mine goes to Texas every winter. He doesn't like American beers much but discovered that a local bar serves a very tasty porter. American friends bought him the first few but he struggled to make himself understood when he tried to buy a round. In the end he had to spell the word out ...

Mancunian Brit: "P-O-R-T-E-R - PORTER"

Texan barman: "Ah, yeah - PODDA!"

A roadside diner in Georgia where my wife and I had stopped off for breakfast on our road trip. I ordered eggs over easy, steak, hash browns, grits and bacon from the friendly waitress who was the very essence of what you'd imagine a Southern waitress to be. Then a ordered a side order of ham.

"Say wha' now?"

"Can I have some ham please?"

"You want whaaat?"

"Can .. I .. have .. a .. side .. order .. of .. HAM .. please?"

"Unnnh-huh sugar, I'm just not gettin' that funny accent"

At which point my wife interjected -

"He wants a side order of ham"

"OH! You want ha-yem!" and she waddled off, chuckling.

Ham, pronounced "ha-yem"

I’ve lived in Texas for almost 17 years and I still can’t ask for “water”, wat-tur (wat like bat and tur like tur(n)) seems to get me what I want.

And as an FYI during the last 17 years there’s been an explosion of microbrewies in Texas and the beer quality and choice is fantastic.

It is a very small one-bar ex-mining town with a population of less than 100, so the choice of beer isn't great! In fact, they even stopped doing the porter on my friend's last visit. He picked up the last 8 bottles available.
