Get a chain checking tool to monitor wear and tear, also get in the habit of cleaning the chain and derailleur sprockets from time to time. Getting rid of the build up of dirt helps prevent premature chain wear.

Do I neeed to replace the cassette also? if so can I change from a 9 speed to a 10 speed and is it worth it?

If you change to 10-speed, you'll have to change your shifters, unless you've got friction shifters.
