Checking the wear of the chain

Having hurt myself and damaged my bike when a chain snapped with a further five plates with stress fractures I’d never buy a cheap chain or from eBay/fscebook. I Only buy from my LBS or a reputable on line cycle parts supplier.

Reminds me
I take my ebike to the LBS every year to get him to check it over and run it through the Bosch system

last year he was asked me to sort out the output from his computer for him while I was at it

it is about the time of year that I normally ask him to give the whole bike a look over - this time I suspect the pedals bearings may be stuffed and the gears may need changing - mid drive ebike give the whole drive system a lot of power to deal with

he always ends up replacing something - it is normally best to give him something to focus on
he does seem to want to have something to charge me for - I wish he would just charge for a "service" but he seems to think that is a rip off!!

last year he seemed to be wondering about asking me to sort out something on his computer to make it easier for a bike mechanic to use
I may suggest something to him this time

his shop is next door to my wife's hair dresser (the hair dresser is married to the LBS manager - good planning or what!!!)

yeah the calf and chain ring interface when the chain goes is not a nice one IME.

absolute yes to the buy only from reputable stores, BUT, during the shortage of spares in that period of 5-6 years ago, where chains seemed to become even rarer than groupsets, alot of fakes entered the system, and I bought one from what I thought was a reputable store, which turned out to be fake, and it lasted 6 months during the summer, normally I get chains to last 12-18 months, and occasionaly across 2 winters at least.

course by the time Id fitted it, because I buy one to have as a spare the moment I replace it, plus the 6months of use, it was at least 2 years plus, and Id already lost the receipts and records of it.

so always double check them for the obvious signs of fakeness when you get them, before putting them in the cupboard for later.
