When you push out a link on a shimano 10 speed chain it breaks a small loop of metal off. I noticed it on the push pin of the chain tool. Afaik, they aren't reusable after that.

That would happen with any chain, if the chain isn't properly aligned in the tool, as it has to be exactly aligned at 90° to the chain tool pin. On 6-8 speed chains it doesn't really matter if that happens, but it's vital on 10 speed that you break the chains very slowly and carefully, due to the smaller tolerances. That issue can also happen if your chain tool isn't 10 speed compatible.

The chain broke on my winter bike back in November, unfortunately I didn't have a chain tool or a KMC link thingy. Therefore I had to phone 'her indoors' to come and rescue me and the bike. She did this without a single word of complaint.

Cost me a bottle of wine to appease her

I've only broke a chain once, many years ago, the 1/8 chain on my fixed, the chain was knackered and due for replacement, might have something to do with it breaking, when it broke it nearly launched me over the handlebars, then it whipped back and wrapped round the hub locking the rear wheel up.
