Hello to all. First of all I have to say the site is terrific. I got my 1st bike 4weeks ago (a road bike) as I had,nt cycled for years I wanted to know what kinds of things I should take with me on a run.the info I received was very helpful. Amongst other things it was suggested I take a cell phone with me. This was a great idea as only 3 weeks into my cycling I came off the bike at a fair speed. And as well as a lot of cuts and bruises I have also recieved a broken collar bone. Ouch. Although it was a week ago and I am still in a lot of pain I miss going out on the bike already.can anyone tell me the recovery time before I can go back out on the bike again. Cheers.

Bad luck!

How bad a break was it? I have heard of people with minor breaks doing gentle cycling after 6 weeks or so, but would imagine that badly smashed bones would take a lot longer to heal enough.

I take it yours was a cleanish break? I think they reckon 6 to 8 weeks in a sling and safer to leave it till nearer 3 months before cycling but you really need to be guided by your doctor/surgeon.

I wasn't so fortunate and now have this in my shoulder. IMG_0446_zps1058cb62.jpg

I initially thought I might get back in around 2 months, but judging by the weakness and pain I am experiencing on moving my shoulder I think I will probably give it the full 3 months just to be safe. I see my surgeon this Friday so maybe find out more then.

Hope your recovery goes well and it knits back together without problem.

6 weeks on average. I was back on a horse after 4 weeks (for about 5 minutes and then I got off again and waited another fortnight before trying again).

Don't rush back on to your bike. It's not the cycling that really causes additional pain but the lumpy bumpy road. Heaven forbid you come across a pothole when feeling fragile. Investing in a turbo trainer might be the way to go though.

Oucherama !

Get well soon, OP and everyone else posting with similar injuries. When I were a lad, my best mate cut a corner turning right and put his shoulder through the rear passenger window of a car. Not nice. He healed pretty quick though.

I think being young definitely helps. The older you get, the healing process seems to take that bit longer unfortunately and I just don't think it's worth risking further damage if it's not healed and stable.

A proper cycling injury!!
I broke mine badly in the winter of 2012 and was plated. As soon as I could actually get my leg over a bike I was on the turbo trainer, with my arm still in the sling. I kept my arm in the sling for six weeks and had a lot of muscle wastage. I have since been told by my physio he'd have guys back on a bike within three weeks with a plate in. I can't imagine how much pain they would be in though.
I was six weeks in a sling then had issues with the plate restricting my movement and so had to have that removed. So I had another few weeks of being careful.
For me, luckily (if that's the right word!) it was over winter so time on the turbo wasn't as bad as missing a summer of riding.
Get a turbo trainer, and keep your fitness going, you'll hit the road in a couple of months as if you'd never been away.
