I have a £1K C2W voucher on it's way to me and it was really intended for a Boardman Cx so if I fancied a bit of the South Downs Way it would be possible on that. I currently have a Trek FX 7.3 with mud guards and pannier for my commute and a Boardman Road Comp, I was going to fleabay the comp but sitting on the train to Chichester from London I parked my Trek next to a Brompton and to tell you the truth it got me thinking how useful it would be to use for my commute. I could sling it in the motor and drive to Haslemere when need be, park a fair bit from the station etc etc...........

So now I'm confused. What would you do?

A brompton is a bike for life. A boardman is a generic Taiwanese mass-produced consumer durable.

I'd buy the Brompton and I'd also buy an S/H 'cross bike (or frame) from eBay and put myself together a budget crosser for the South Downs way trip.

I've got a Brompton which I use a lot and I agree with the comments above.
I would not want to regularly use it for distances over say, two or three miles. The bike will take it, but it is harder than a "real" bike.
I have taken it off road, but certainly wouldn't want to do so very often.

But, as a bike to sling in the back of a car, jump on, a go a fairly short distance, it is superb.
