No mushrooms this time. I was given four pints of Nibley Ale as a free takeaway - I made a rough-n-ready chicken stew with potatoes, chestnuts and beer.
Beer, really. Chicken and maderia or chicken/white wine but I've never used beer, though a chicken casserole needs alchohol. Fascinating.

I found a great cabbage recipe the other week; cut cabbage into wedges, fry in butter and garlic, put in oven dish, pour over some stock (I used bouillon for extra middle-class merits), bake for a bit. Yumtus!

You want a bit of bacon and onion in that.

I had beer and I had chicken. If you were doing it by design you'd use something slightly less bitter than the Nibley, or use half beer and half stock. It was nice, though, and the chestnuts offset the bitterness.

Kale-better in all ways. Including with venison, and rabbit as well.
I had kale for breakfast

How big are your wedges (if you'll pardon my French)? Like a quarter of a cabbage? Or an eighth?
I like the idea, but I'm trying to get a mental picture here

The only cooked brassica I like is red cabbage, with bacon, apple and onion. Come to think of it, the only raw brassica I like is cabbage. The rest of the mutant varieties can go hang.

After typing that I was wondering how closely related watercress was to the garden nasturtium, which has a somewhat similar flavour. Turns out that the nasturtium is not actually a Nasturtium at all. I hope I'm not boring everyone...
