After typing that I was wondering how closely related watercress was to the garden nasturtium, which has a somewhat similar flavour. Turns out that the nasturtium is not actually a Nasturtium at all. I hope I'm not boring everyone...

Latin name for turnip is Brassica Rapa Rapa and you can eat the leaves as a veg (very nice in fact)

Watercress - ok a bit more of a stretch but it is a cruciferous veg of the Brassicaceae family also: "Watercress, with the botanical name Nasturtium officinale, is a rapidly growing, aquatic or semi-aquatic, perennial plant native to Europe and Asia, and one of the oldest known leaf vegetables consumed by humans. It is currently a member of the family Brassicaceae, botanically related togarden cress, mustard and radish—all noteworthy for their peppery, tangy, zesty, piquant flavor." (wiki again)

Horseradish is also a brassica.

Nasturtiums are lovely in salads - leaves and flowers - and the seeds make mock capers.

The flowers impart a sort of peppery taste. They also help keep pests out of the garden, especially in combination with marigolds.

Do you eat all the plants in your garden, or is it only when you've had a few?

I've not got much in the way of a proper garden - just a few pots of stuff for the slugs. But I get a lot of blackberries from the neighbours' hedge and I steal a lot of bay, rosemary and sage from a handful of nearby places...

I've never tried nasturtiums, but Iike watercress, radish and horseradish sauce. It's good to learn something.

Good King Henry would actually be better on pizza as it is related to Spinach rather than Kale, ie Chenopodiaceae rather than Brassicaceae.* I love GKH, it can get enormous if left to grown on horse manure and you can just wander out and pick a few bits to go in your soup or whatevs.

*I have boldly stated this without looking it up.

Can't say I have seen them. They seem to like the side ones here fried in bacon fat but still crunchy with bacon for breakfast! Tried once but ended up over cooking the bacon. Rendered down some bacon fat ages ago should try again.

Back to the OP -

Brussels sprouts are the tastiest of vegetables, the side parts are wonderful as are the tops. As with most green vegetables I like them best lightly steamed.

Every year a huge smile comes on my face when the usual little green balls from the side appear in the veg shop, and another when I see the tops on sale.

I like most veg, but Brussels sprouts are definitely my number one favourite among the green ones. (Can't stand broad beans though)

Never tried the tops. Must do so if I can get them without the beans!
