BT broadband running slow the last few weeks. I pay for 20MBps and it should be fine for iplayer etc. I finally moved the router to the downstairs bg so I can plug it into the master socket. The BT Speed test showed a download of 841Kbps and said for my connection an acceptable range was 4000-21000. BT waffled about tis, but in essence are saying this is ok

Just took me about 3-4 mins to download an 18MB driver file.

After an hour of me politely being rude they agreed to refer it to the next level of tech support.

Any idea how to progress things?

If the acceptable range is 4000-21000 and the BT speedtest result was 841Kbps, then that's clearly unacceptable and they should be doing something about it. If not, tell them you want your MAC code so you can move to another ISP that values your custom.

I only have an 'up to 8mb' connection so when my speedtest result was 816 Kbps a few weeks back, I was told that falls within the acceptable range as the lower limit was 600.... thankfully it's not as slow now!

One other thing which makes no sense to me but was suggested by the engineer who came out when we were going through this business with BT (he was the dude who finally traced the problem to some cockup in the wiring between our dropwire and the green box by the roadside a quarter of a mile away).

He reckoned that one secret to the best possible speeds with BT is to leave your hub/router/modem thingy on 24/7, on the basis that if you keep switching it off overnight, their systems can run an auto-test routine at random times, spot yours isn't working, flag it as a potential fault and throttle the speed back as a precaution.

That may well be complete bollox, but FWIW since we started leaving our home hub thingy on all the time, we've never noticed a speed problem either up or down.

Problem slightly solved. About 6 mths ago I changed my number. Phsyical line, address etc stayed the same. Somehow they managed to leave the broadband attached to the old line and the phone service is on the new line.....

I had a similar situation - for quite some time I had a similarly slow connection. When I contacted BT I was told that the speed was acceptable. I asked "to whom?" and then phoned Virgin Media.

All now much faster, better, and cheaper.

Had a similar/same problem with my BT Total Broadband. Much slower that the promised download speed. Had several coversations with tech bods in India who were unable to help and finally agreed to send an engineer into the exchange to carry out a physical line check. I never established if they did that but miraculously speed went up the nerxt day to 6.0MBs (from 0.5~1.0MBs).

Thread on it here.

Personally I'd stick with BT. I've been with them many years and this is the first problem I've had and I found there response to be good. Just keep rattling thier cage.
