Hydrolysis, caused by high humidity. Top tip for avoiding it in your new shoes, wear them regularly, the air being pumped in and out as you step keeps the internal humidity low.

Thanks. Now I know.
I like the top tip because not using them regularly is exactly what happened to my shoes.
I must just remember to remember that now.

The thread title sent me back in time to '88-'90, when Paul Simon's Graceland was one on the pieces featured in my GCSE Music...

Do Ecco even make running shoes?

I have had a few pairs of Ecco shoes. Not sport shoes. Generally happy with them. They took a couple of years to wear out, with regular use. They are not fox proof (I left a pair outside and the foxes chewed them up)

I was surprised as they aren't a name like Nike or Asics or New Balance that you associate with running shoes.

The website does list some shoes called Biom that they offer as "trail running shoes".

So up to know, we have a person who didn't know there was such a thing as running shoes, decides he needs a pair of running shoes, and then buys a pair of shoes that aren't running shoes.

So would you usually decide you need a thing, without knowing about it, and buy a thing, without deciding about it?

Impressive.

Good morning,

Ecco tend to have model names for shoes such as Golf or Biom, do you know or can do a web search for these shoes.

Knowing this won’t mend the soles but might give an inkling on what has gone wrong.

The reason I ask is that the soles look very simple for a modern running shoe.

It is hard to tell though as marketing in running shoes is way more advanced than in cycling!

There is one school of thought that says shoes should be almost non-existent and resemble bare foot running. The other end of the scale is huge amounts of padding to prevent over/under pronation and end up with a “perfect” running style.

Yet even that level of hype doesn’t go for a single use shoe. :-)

Bye

Thanks. Searching for pictures of Ecco Biom returns golf shoes, running shoes, trail shoes, and many other types.

I thought there were just 'running shoes', now I find out there are, 'indoor'/ track running shoes (must be these), also 'cross-trail', 'hybrid', 'country', 'athletic'...

Must try something else or I'll end up barefoot.

I think I might return mine for a refund too!
Brought pre COVID not sure how many 1000 miles I've done in them. Did 13 miles in them tonight!

Running shoes are getting skimpier tbh. I avoid any without any rubber outsole like the op's which are basically gym shoes.

I look for full rubber outsoles and decent trad but I am in Yorkshire!🤣

Good morning,
……. Must try something else or I'll end up barefoot.

You might be surprised by how expensive barefoot running is. 🤣

Nike Free

Set Your Feet Free

Engineered for the natural range of motion, Nike Free technology sets your feet free, so you can run the way you're meant to.

What this means for other Nike running shoes such as the Vaporfly that was banned/almost banned as it gave an advantage is rather confusing.

Your next step is to decide if you want shoes designed for runners whose first contact with the floor is the heel or the ball of the foot.

Back in the 1970s heel first was the way to go, nowadays that is evil, unless it isn’t.

Finally to depress you some more, search running shoe lifetime, you may find that your shoes will only last a few months, if you get serious.

This starts a debate of should you buy cheaper shoes and replace them frequently.

I will date myself by mentioning that I once bought “running shoes” from Littlewods and wore them out in a week, but they were only around £6 in the early 1980s.

Bye

Ian
